Take Note

While serving my weekend sentence, I came to several conclusions/observations:

  • Ignoring pain for almost 2 years is not a good idea.
  • I do not like the ER, not one little bit.
  • Surgery is not fun!
  • Gall Bladder problems must be hereditary.
  • Morphine is an evil drug. The side effects (migraines and nausea) are almost worse than the pain it's trying to take away. Although Zophran is good stuff for nausea.
  • Watching fireworks from a hospital balcony isn't very exciting for little girls.
  • Pushing mom's IV pole around the hospital is way more exciting than the previously mentioned fireworks.
  • Be prepared for little kids to raise/lower your hospital bed. Those buttons are just too tempting.
  • 3 days without food is a long time.
  • I get cranky without food.
  • Watching the Food Network on TV during that three days is a form of self torture.
  • Mush soup was not exactly what I had in mind for my grand meal after all that fasting.
  • When you're starving, mush soup doesn't taste half bad.
  • When I'm drugged up and out of it, apparently all I could talk about was pancakes. (But in my defense, I really do love pancakes.)
  • Apparently, farting is music to nurse's ears. (At least that's what one of the nurses told me after I complained about feeling so gassy/bloated from the surgery.)
  • No matter how much you are told to 'rest up' in the hospital, it is almost impossible to do so.
  • Hospital beds are terribly uncomfortable.
  • If I have one more needle stuck in my arm, I think I might scream.
  • I am really glad that my babies weren't C-sections.
  • I didn't realize just how much I use my stomach muscles.
  • The DR that did my follow up must think I'm a drug addict. He gave me prescriptions for 2 different types of narcotics, as well as heavy duty Motrin.
  • I must have a high pain tolerance, because I really have no need for the narcotics. It doesn't hurt 'that bad'. (Although, I am still really sore, just not enough to warrant taking Percocet or Lortab.)
  • As much as I complained about my weekend, there are a LOT of people who have it a lot worse. I am grateful my problems were as minimal as they were.
  • My parents are amazing. My in-laws are amazing. They all took care of my kids, and I am so grateful!
  • Jeremy is amazing, and I couldn't ask for a better husband!
  • I really missed the mundane mommy tasks (except for the diaper changing) of day-to-day life.
  • There really is no place like home!

I must say that I am feeling way better since being home. Thursday is my follow-up appointment, and I should find out if more surgery will be required. I am crossing my fingers that the remaining stones will pass on their own, because the next round of surgery won't be laparoscopic. Also, thanks for all of the nice comments and concern!

I have to agree with the farting comment. My patients give me the wierdest looks when I get so excited to hear that they are "passing gas". It's a nurse thing, and it's a good thing to do after surgery, cuz if you don't, it will hurt!! :)

Well the whole experience doesn't sound like it was fun for you at all. Poor thing. I say try really hard not to take those pain pills because I'm convinced they are just as evil as morphine withe nausea...can you imagine how bad it would hurt to throw up after surgery? Oh boy I don't think I'd wish that on anyone. I'm glad you're feeling better though. You are a trooper....and when you say you ignored the pain for a few years...would the pain go away for awhile and then come back and then go away and etc?

Bless you heart Amanda I hope you start feeling better fast. Surgery leaves you so sore!! Yes you have no idea how much you use you stomach muscles until they are ripped in half lol...Both of my pregnancies were c-section, I have really had people tell me they would perfer to have a c-section without EVER having surgery (thinking it is fast and easy) Crazy people it hurts!!! but anyways I guess I better not write you a novel lol...I know what your going through and taking care of kids on top of it makes it that much harder....Get better soon

I definitely see what you mean from a nurses point of view and as a frequent hospital guest. It does change your perspective and makes you appreciate home so much more. I hope you recover quick and have good news at the doctors.
